Zhengzhou starts rail service to Hamburg

Responding to rising trade volumes, Zhengzhou, a business and logistics centre in Central China, has started rail freight service to HamburgGermany.

The train takes 18 days to make the 10,214-km trip, but that's more than twice as fast as maritime transport, reported China Daily.

TSA Lines Plan Trans-Pacific Peak-Season Surcharge

Buoyed by positive reports on consumer confidence and spending, shipping lines that carry containerized imports from Asia have announced their plan to implement a peak-season surcharge of $400 per 40-foot container to all U.S. destinations effective Aug. 1.

This would be the second rate hike in one month in the eastbound Pacific. Some member lines of the Transpacific Stabilization Agreement, a discussion group of 15 carriers, on July 1 implemented previously announced rate hikes as high as $400 per FEU to the West Coast and $600 per FEU to all other destinations in the U.S.

Indian Railways' Freight Traffic Rose Nearly 5 Percent in May

Indian Railways carried 171.91 million metric tons of revenue-earning freight traffic in April and May, the first two months of fiscal year 2013-14, increasing 4.6 percent or 7.53 million metric tons from 164.38 million metric tons moved during the same period last year.

In May, the revenue-earning freight traffic handled by Indian Railways was 88.19 million metric tons, up 4.8 percent or 4.06 million metric tons compared with 84.13 million metric tons in the same month in the previous year.

China to spend $767b on roads

China will allocate about US$767 billion for road projects between 2013 and 2030, the Ministry of Transport said, in the latest step by policymakers to underpin growth in the world's second-largest economy, reported Reuters.

China plans to have about 400,000 km of roads across the country by 2030, compared to 173,000 km by the end of 2012, Dai Dongchang, an official from the Ministry told a news conference.

China Railway Corp. Launches Express Cargo Service

The China Railway Corp., a spinoff of China’s former Ministry of Railways, has launched a new express cargo service to allow it to better compete in the logistics market, Global Times reports.  

The company will start delivery of freight door-to-door via its express service on June 15, allowing clients to place orders either online or by call, instead of going through the previously longer procedures such as submitting request plans and contacting different departments for loading and transport.

The services offered include bulk transport of goods, including coal, oil and iron ore, as well as high-speed train delivery of small express packages.

FedEx Freight to hike rates

   Domestic and Canadian FedEx Freight shipping rates will rise an average of 4.5 percent on July 1, the company recently announced.  


   The increases apply to shipments associated with the FXF 1000, FXF 501 base rates. Absolute minimum charges and accessorial rates will also change. The fuel surcharge will remain the same.

United Arab Shipping Co. Plans Asia-North Europe Rate Hike

United Arab Shipping Co. will boost rates for dry and refrigerated cargo on its trade from Asia to North Europe, effective July 1.

The increase will be $910 per 20-foot-equivalent unit, the container line said.

Maersk Line, Mediterranean Shipping Co., Hapag-Lloyd and OOCL have also planned Asia-to-North Europe rate hikes for July 1, despite recent declining rates in the trade lane.

Nanning-Guangzhou Railway Guangxi section opens for traffic in 2013

NANNING-Guangzhou railway's Guangxi section has completed track laying and is expected to be open for traffic in November this year, Xinhua reports.

The railway, capable of handling double stacked unit trains, is said to become the most convenient traffic means of connecting Guangxi and Guangdong. After completion, it will cut Nanning-Guangzhou transits from 11 to three hours.

Virginia, Ningbo Ports Sign Cooperation Agreement

The Virginia Port Authority and China’s Ningbo Municipal Port Administration signed a memorandum of understanding this week to promote the all-water route between the two ports.

The agreement laid down plans for cooperation on marketing activities and market research, as well as exchange of information, technology, modernization details and training.

Suez Canal Tolls Increase

Toll increases for ships transiting the Suez Canal took effect on May 1, 2013.

Container ships got off relatively easy, with increases of about 2 percent, Middle East Monitor reports. Oil tankers and other bulk vessels incurred the greatest hikes, at around 5 percent.

In the first quarter of 2013, 1,479 container ships passed through the canal, down 6.7 percent from 1,585 in the same quarter a year ago.
